- The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi, located about 300 km from Srinagar.
- From Jammu, you can take a taxi or a bus to Srinagar, which takes around 8-9 hours.
By Road
- Kashmir is accessible by road through the Jammu-Srinagar Highway.
- State transport and private buses connect Srinagar with cities like Jammu and Delhi.
- Self-driving is also an option, but the terrain can be challenging during winter.
Best Time to Visit Kashmir
- Summer (April to June): Ideal for pleasant weather and sightseeing. The valleys are in full bloom, and the temperatures range from 15°C to 30°C.
- Autumn (September to November): The landscape turns golden with falling leaves, making it a photographer’s paradise.

How to Roam Around in Kashmir
- Taxis: Taxis are the most convenient way to get around. You can hire a taxi for a full day or for specific destinations. We pre-booked our taxi from Shake Tours and travels. For airport pick up/ drop and for travelling within Kashmir, we used their taxi. You can contact them at +91-7006608852.
- Local Buses: Available for intercity travel but not very comfortable for tourists.
- Shikaras (Boats): To explore Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake in Srinagar.
- Self-Drive: Bikes and cars are available for rent if you wish to explore on your own.
5-Day Itinerary for Kashmir
Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar & Local Exploration
- Arrive in Srinagar, check in to a houseboat or hotel.
- Afternoon: Visit the famous Mughal Gardens – Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi.
- Evening: Take a relaxing Shikara Ride on Dal Lake.
- Shikara ride costed us INR 500 because of off season. In peak season this costs around INR 1000 – 1500. We took the ride at Ghat no. 6 with a smiling local Aziz Chacha.
Day 2: Gulmarg (Day Trip)
- Morning: Drive to Gulmarg (approx. 2 hours).
- Activities:
- Take the Gondola Ride (Asia’s highest cable car) to enjoy breathtaking views.
- Try skiing or snowboarding (winter).
- Evening: Return to Srinagar.
Day 3: Pahalgam (Overnight Stay)
- Morning: Drive to Pahalgam (approx. 3 hours).
- Activities:
- Visit Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, and Chandanwari.
- Enjoy a short trek or pony ride in the valleys.
- Night: Stay in a hotel or resort in Pahalgam.
Day 4: Sonmarg (Day Trip)
- Morning: Drive to Sonmarg (approx. 2.5 hours).
- Activities:
- Explore Thajiwas Glacier by trek or pony ride.
- Enjoy the scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere.
- Evening: Return to Srinagar.
Day 5: Srinagar & Departure
- Morning: Visit the Shankaracharya Temple and Hazratbal Shrine.
